What Kentucky weather does to a roof here
South-central Kentucky sits where Gulf moisture meets cold air moving down out of the Ohio Valley, and that collision is what makes this region a genuine hail and severe-thunderstorm corridor. Warren County and its neighbors take damaging wind and hail events most years, with the heaviest activity from March through July.
Hail
Stones don't have to be golf-ball sized to end a roof's life. Quarter-sized hail driven at speed bruises the asphalt mat and strips granules, and that damage keeps aging even after the storm clears. A roof that "looks fine" after a hail event is the most common thing we get called about three years later, when the leaks start and the claim window has closed.
Straight-line wind
Derecho and squall-line events regularly bring 60–80 mph gusts through this area. Those break seal strips along ridges and rakes even where nothing looks missing, leaving shingles ready to peel in the next storm.
Humidity and attic heat
Kentucky summers put brutal thermal load on a roof deck, and a poorly ventilated attic bakes shingles from underneath while trapping moisture that rots sheathing. Ventilation is a bigger factor in local roof lifespan than most homeowners realize, and it's the first thing we check.
Freeze-thaw and ice damming
Winters here swing across the freezing line repeatedly. That cycle works water into small flashing gaps, expands it, and widens them a little more each year. Ice-and-water shield in valleys and at eaves is cheap insurance against it.
